So you want to diversify your store offerings for your customers by importing certain products from other countries in Asia. The question now is: How will you get your goods into the country hassle-free? You need an import license. Or do you really need one? Let’s find out.
What is it?
An important license is a document that covers the administrative procedures which require the submission of certain applications and documents, other than those required by the customs department of a country, to relevant administrative bodies as a prior requirement for the importation of goods.
You can choose to acquire one or get the services of an importation body.
How do you register at the Bureau of Customs for an import license?
To register as an importer, you need to secure first an Import Clearance Certificate from the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The certificate is valid only for three years. After which, you need to register with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and create an account with the Client Profile Registration System (CPRS) which costs Php1000.00 and takes 15 days to process. This document needs to be updated on a yearly basis.
What are the needed documents for an import license?
As an importer, you need to submit the following documents whenever your goods enter the Philippines:
- Import permit
- Packing list
- Invoice
- Lading bill
- Customs Import Declaration
- Certificate of Origin
However, if you are bringing into the country animals, food, medicine, plants, or certain chemicals, you must first procure a Certificate of Product Registration from the Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines.
What are the tariffs and taxes that you need to pay?
Typically, import tariffs range from 0 to 65 percent.
Goods that are classified to have high domestic production usually have higher tariffs. Non-agricultural goods typically average 6.7 percent. It should also be noted that the Philippines Customs applies a 12 percent value-added tax (VAT) for imported goods. However, there is no tariff or tax for goods that cost less than Php10,000.00 or around USD200.00.
With all the paperwork and processing to acquire an import license, it can be quite a hassle to get one, especially if your goods are expected to arrive before all the processes of getting an import license get to be completed.
